Mila Halizova was born in 1992. As the granddaughter of a cabinetmaker and a pediatrician, she has long been fascinated by these natural sources of inspiration and manual work.
From 2010-2016, she studied at the Institute of Architecture, Department of Costume Design in Penza. During her studies, she worked in her atelier, where she experimented with textiles. After her graduation, she continued to work at her atelier and started her brand, Mila Halizova.
As an independent artist, she won an art contest at Moscow Art Square, where she was granted free education at a university. During this period, clothing was a central outcome of her creative process. She prefers to use quality, mostly natural and recycled materials, with the idea of upcycling. The way it comes together is organic.
However, designing clothes eventually became less important to her. She wanted to explore her artistic vision because it was always more than just designing clothes. She moved to Kaliningrad, where she had a studio and experimented with natural and recycled products. She challenged herself to make functional designs and art objects, inspired by the Baltic Sea, culture, and tradition.
Since 2022, she has been producing her new works in Montenegro.
By observing the life cycles of her materials, the artist was able to implement a philosophy based on an analysis of ephemerality, ranging from preservation to decay.
Her large tactile works combine collected natural objects such as acorns, seeds, inflorescences, cones, and algae. One could say that the visual impression of her work is derived from its tactility. All materials are found during the artist's frequent nature walks around the Bay of Kotor area and mountains. More recent investigations in her studio practice include earth, clay, resin, and tools with an intuitive sense of form. "Conjunction" refers to the physical connection between the two most important elements of her practice: her methods and materials, and how they are intertwined or conjoined. This process echoes the artist's deeply personal experiences and associations, as demonstrated by the titles of many of her paintings.
Elements are simplified and pared down to what is essential. With such simplicity, the viewer can appreciate not only the sculptural details, such as the harmonious nature of connecting materials, but also the beauty and wonder offered by nature, which we often overlook.
The elegant simplicity of Mila Halizova's line belies its complex process. The expression of beauty, while exploring the properties of natural elements, remains at the heart of her practice. The sensitive interpretation of Mila's paintings does not stop at their surface, which only acts as a skin, hiding a much deeper and less straightforward level of interpretation.
